Plançó: Catalan Animation Schools Project

Mecal organizes the competition for animation pieces for students from Catalan universities and animation schools. The finalists will be screened and the winning short film will be awarded a student accreditation for the MIFA market, Marché International du Film d’Animation d’Annecy.

Pitching coaching for animation projects

March 26th, from 11h to 14h 

Learn how to make your animation project attractive on a pitch and get funding. The professionals that will give advice are: Mercedes Marro, Anna Solanas, Marc Riba and Xavier Romero.

Workshop: Conception, creative development and graphic creation by Josep

March 26th, from 18h to 19h 

In this workshop, the French illustrator Aurélien Froment, also known as Aurel, will talk about how he came to conceive his feature film “Josep”, winner of the award for Best European Animated Film of 2020. During the workshop, Aurel will show samples of his drawings and It will explain the creative development and graphic creation process that followed.


Workshop: Animation for Teachers with Mario Torrecillas

March 27th, from 11h to 14h 

Mario Torrecillas will tell us about the audiovisual and educational PDA project, “Petits Dibuixos Animats”, which, throughout film and animation workshops, fosters collective reflection and creativity of children through music and animation. He will transmit the foundations of the techniques used in the project, so they can be put into practice in the classrooms, using mobile devices and tablets, available to teachers and students.


Masterclass: The Mandalorian and the future of VFX

March 27th, from 17h to 19h 

Javier Roca is a VFX artist who has worked in companies such as MPC, in London and Montreal, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), in Singapore, and Weta Digital, in New Zealand. He is currently VFX Supervisor in El Ranchito, where he has participated in projects such as “The Impossible”, “Game of Thrones” or “The Mandalorian” among others. Through his extensive experience in the sector, he will talk to us about the future of VFX.

Irene Airoldi, Filmax International Marketing Director, will talk about the distribution strategy of the film “La Gallina Turuleca” and its international success. 

Masterclass: Stop Motion Animation

March 28th, from 16:30h to 18:30h 

Sergio Lara is an international animator specialized in Stop Motion who has participated in projects such as “Isle of dogs” by Wes Anderson, “Anomalisa” by Charlie Kaufman and “Claykids” by Javier Tostado, will take us into the world of stop motion through his trajectory.


Masterclass: Playing with Animation

April 7th, from 18h to 18:30h

Why would you want to make an animation interactive? And how would you do that? What is meant by interaction anyway? The artist and director Michael Frei, best known for his short film “Plug & Play”, will introduce us to interactive animation through his peculiar projects. 


Masterclass: Auteur animation

April 15th, from 18h to 19h 

Canadian animator, director and screenwriter Patrick Bouchard, creator of projects such as “Le subject” (2018) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2018, “Bydlo” (2012) or “Les ramoneurs cérébraux” (2003), will talk about auteur animation through his creative process and the different techniques with which he works.


Workshop: In the service of the story, under the orders of the director

April 16, from 19:30h to 21h

In this workshop José Luis Agreda, art director of “Buñuel en el Laberinto de las Tortugas”, by Salvador Simó and “Robot Dreams”, the new film by Pablo Berger, will talk about how to define the general style and design of characters and locations of an animated film.
